Stephanie Y. Brown, M.D., MPH, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician at Sutter Health’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and medical director for Sutter’s Institute for Advancing Health Equity (IAHE).

At the Institute, Dr. Brown contributes her population health and clinical expertise to advocacy, research, education, and innovation efforts to the elimination of health disparities for vulnerable people. Alongside the Institute’s executive director, Dr. Brown is responsible for setting the health equity strategy for the Sutter Health system, fulfilling the organization’s commitment to advancing health equity for its 3.3 million patients across Northern California and beyond. As medical director, Dr. Brown also chairs IAHE’s Physician and Advanced Practice Clinician Ambassador Council (PAAC), which convenes Sutter Health’s clinician leaders to advance health equity across the organization’s five markets.

Dr. Brown earned her bachelor’s degree in History of Science & Medicine from Yale University, her M.D. from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, and completed her internship and residency in Emergency Medicine at Los Angeles County/Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA. After residency, Dr. Brown completed a health policy fellowship in Washington, DC, where she earned a Master of Public Health degree from George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health and worked as a physician fellow at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. Dr. Brown hails from the south side of Chicago, IL, and lives in Oakland, CA.
