Description

This session will focus on how the Veterans Health Information Exchange (VHIE) Clinical Data Quality (CDQ) team collaborates with external partners to improve the quality of clinical data. The team provides detailed feedback on clinical data quality and discusses strategies to improve it, such as updating electronic health record (EHR) systems, educating clinicians, revising data mapping, and changing workflows.
From May to July 2023, the VHIE CDQ team received over 20.5 million clinical documents from 45 different health systems. Through these collaborations, significant improvements were seen:
Specific to follow-up collaborations:

  • 42% realized a >10% clinical data quality improvement.
  • 21% experienced >40% clinical data quality improvement.
  • One health system improved from 0%–99.9% in immunizations.

These improvements show the importance of these collaborations in addressing system challenges and improving data quality. The session will also discuss future research on how better clinical data can impact projects using artificial intelligence (AI) and improve the implementation of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) standards.

You Will Learn:

  • How the VHIE CDQ team helps improve clinical data quality
  • Strategies for improving data quality, including EHR updates and clinician education
  • The impact of collaborative efforts on clinical data quality
  • Real-world examples of data quality improvements
  • Future research directions, including the impact on AI projects and FHIR® implementations
  • The importance of ongoing collaboration and awareness in improving data quality
