Dr Willard received her medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and subsequently completed an Internal medicine residency at the UW as well. She is board certified through the ABIM. In 2009 Dr Willard obtained board certification through American Board of Clinical Lipidology as a clinical lipid specialist, and has actively participated in many educational and administrative roles with the National Lipid Association since that time. She currently serves as the President of the NLA. Current projects in this realm include advocacy for recognition of clinical lipid specialists as a taxonomically unique discipline with the National Uniform Claims Committee, as well as ongoing work with the NLA to restore LDL-cholesterol as a metric within the Universal Foundation of CMS, and updating of metrics pertinent to systematic measurement of LDL-c as an outcome measure to achieve impact on CV disease clinical management. She has co-authored manuscripts focused on simplifying LDL-c management in the primary care venue,which are being incorporated into health care system clinical priorities.

In May 2025 she represented the NLA at the European Atherosclerosis Society 93rd Congress in Glasgow Scotland, as part of a joint session between NLA and EAS discussing clinical ASCVD, CV risk mitigation and implementation of related guideline measures from the perspective of creating impact on regulatory agencies, health care systems, clinicians and patients. Additionally she is board certified with the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Physicians since 2018, and serves as Physician Advisor for her health care system Ascension Wisconsin.

She is Chief of Staff at Ascension SE Wisconsin All Saints, chairs the Joint Chiefs of Staff which is the regional medical executive committee composed of medical staff leadership at 7 hospitals. In this role,she actively works in governance aspects pertinent to the engagement of the medical staff within healthcare systems, as well as implementation of quality metrics. Otherwise Dr Willard enjoys polar bear photography experiences in the remote far Arctic and loves to travel with her family.
